'10 Things I Hate About You' the TV Series? Yes, Please
Here's a somewhat shameful admission: My biggest pop-culture guilty pleasure is probably entertainment aimed at teenage girls. I own and regularly listen to albums by Hanson, Kelly Clarkson and Pink; I watch Gossip Girl religiously; and I love clever teen movies like Bring It On, Mean Girls and, yes, 10 Things I Hate About You, the 1999 comedy starring Julia Stiles, Larisa Oleynik, Heath Ledger and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a very loose adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew set in a suburban high school.
Now comes word that ABC Family has greenlit a series based on the movie, to be directed by Gil Junger, who also helmed the film. No cast members have been announced, but certainly none of the original actors will be back; the movie's screenwriters are likewise not involved. Still, I got a little sense of glee seeing this announcement, and if the show can capture the movie's ebullient sense of humor and honest respect for teen life and relationships, then it could very well end up being something worth watching, for teen girls of all ages and genders.
