A 'Heathers' TV Series?
I've been pretty sanguine when it comes to TV-series remakes of beloved properties, for the most part; although I was annoyed by the potential U.S. remake of classic British sitcom Absolutely Fabulous (which never made it on the air), I've been enjoying ABC Family's recent TV version of the movie 10 Things I Hate About You, and of course the American take on The Office is one of the most successful comedies on TV. Remakes are a fact of life in showbiz these days, and like anything, they can be done well or done poorly.
But I'm more apprehensive than usual about the latest announcement, that Fox is developing a TV series based on the dark 1989 high-school satire Heathers, which happens to be my favorite movie of all time. The plot of the movie pretty much precludes any sort of ongoing narrative, so a serialized adaptation will by default have to soften the bite of the original's story, about a pair of outsiders who kill the most popular kids in school. Plus, any network, even Fox, is going to want to pull punches with the uncompromising tone, and probably cast some vapid young hotties who can't act. Maybe I'm being overly cynical but, hey, that was the whole lesson of the movie in the first place.
