I posted a few months ago about writer Jeff Halpern getting a sitcom deal based on his Twitter feed, S*** My Dad Says, which consists of amusing sayings from Halpern's 74-year-old dad, and has become an online sensation. Well, now the pilot produced by Will & Grace creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan has cast its dad, and my fears about the show becoming a sanitized bore have lessened slightly: William Shatner will star as the titular dad, and he's unlikely to put a more cuddly spin on the subject matter.
Still, the show (if it's picked up) is set to air on CBS, which means that at the very least Halpern's dad's penchant for profanity will have to be toned down, starting with the title (natural suggestion from all over the Internet: Shat My Dad Says). And I'm still skeptical that a bunch of one-line quotes can be successfully turned into a long-form narrative. But the casting of Shatner is certainly a step in the right direction; he was always extremely quotable as Denny Crane on Boston Legal.
