TV networks just can't stop inventing awards shows, and the latest concoction is MTV Networks' The Comedy Awards. Honoring comedy in various media, including movies, TV and stand-up, the show gave out nominations yesterday to several TV comedies, with awards favorite 30 Rock leading the pack with seven (including four acting nods for Alec Baldwin, Tracy Morgan, Tina Fey and Jane Krakowski). Fellow awards regulars Modern Family and The Office racked up four nominations each, but The Comedy Awards did find room to acknowledge cult shows It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (for best comedy series); Louie (for best writing); Community (for best directing); Childrens Hospital (for best sketch comedy/alternative series); and Eastbound & Down (for best comedy series and best actor Danny McBride).
That already puts The Comedy Awards pretty far ahead of the Emmys and Golden Globes, so even though I object in principle to the absurd proliferation of awards shows, I'm willing to give this one a shot. The Comedy Awards air simultaneously on Comedy Central, Spike TV, CMT, Logo, TV Land, VH1 and Nick at Nite on April 10.
