Boy do I feel old: Home Improvement is the first show I remember having a "critical" opinion of, back when I was in junior high and my dad got advance copies of a couple of upcoming sitcom pilots (the other was Step by Step). It's one of my earliest memories of watching TV with an eye toward analyzing it and not just accepting everything passively. And now the show about Tim "the Tool Man" Taylor is 20 years old, a fact celebrated in a massive new box set out this week.
Like the Golden Girls set that came in a box shaped like a purse, Home Improvement: The 20th Anniversary Complete Collection is also packaged thematically, in a toolbox-shaped container that features all eight seasons of the show, plus loads of bonus material, including the reunion special, commentaries, bloopers and more. It also includes an actual tool, some sort of "all in one" device that's probably much more useful for display than it is for fixing anything.
