Estelle Getty Dies
Wednesday July 23, 2008
Estelle Getty, best known for her role as Sophia, the "older one" on
The Golden Girls,
died yesterday at the age of 85. Nancy Basile, our own
Guide to Animated TV, says,
She rocked. And when it was first on, I think I was a teenager. So when I would see her in an interview, and she looked 20 years younger, I was floored. That's what's weird to me about this. She seemed like she was 84 way back then. She was an accomplished actress. God bless.
I bet a lot of people are confused on this one! The answer? Estelle Getty was, in reality, much younger than Sophia, the character she played. I remember hearing a story back then about how she got the role of Sophia, and CNN mentions it in
her obit:
In her early 60s, she flunked her "Golden Girls" test twice because it was believed that she didn't look old enough to play 80...She came prepared for the third audition, however, wearing dowdy clothes and telling an NBC makeup artist, "To you, this is just a job. To me, it's my entire career down the toilet unless you make me look 80." The artist did, and Getty got the job and won two Emmys.

Primetime Emmy Nominees Announced
Thursday July 17, 2008

This morning, Kristin Chenoweth (
Pushing Daisies) and Neil Patrick Harris (
How I Met Your Mother), both of whom were nominated, announced the 60th Annual Prime Time Emmy Awards nominees. While there were few surprises in the comedy nominations, I did notice a few interesting things:
- "Out" this year were Extras, Ugly Betty, and Desperate Housewives, receiving much fewer nominations than last year.
- "In" this year were Samantha Who? and Saturday Night Live (nominated for cast member Amy Poehler)
- Remember Jan's disastrous "Dinner Party" on The Office? Or Michael's grand extravaganza in "Goodbye, Toby"? How about 30 Rock's "Rosemary's Baby" episode? All were nominated.
- 30 Rock sweeps the stunt casting categories with seven out of the 11 total nominations. Tim Conway, Carrie Fisher, Edie Falco and Steve Buscemi were among the honored.
See all the
comedy Emmy nominees here, and let me know who you think will win!

The NBC TV show
Chuck featuring
Zachary Levi (as
Chuck Bartowski), a computer geek-turned-government agent, is about to get a taste of what
Nicole Richie can dish out when she makes a cameo appearance. She will play the nasty and spiteful high school nemesis of
Sarah (
Yvonne Strahovski) when they meet again at their ten-year reunion. Sarah is Chuck's love interest and spy mentor.
Richie joins Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan in landing an appearance on a hit primetime show. Look for her in September when Chuck begins its second season.
