Everybody Hates Chris follows thirteen-year-old Chris, whose family moves to a new neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, and buses him two hours away to a predominately white junior high school. Complicating matters are his two younger siblings, Drew and Tonya, and his strict and money-conscious parents, Julius and Rochelle.

- Chris Rock, besides narrating the show, is also the executive producer and co-creator of Everybody Hates Chris. A stand-up comedian, Chris joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1989. He went on to a feature film career that included roles in The Longest Yard, Head of State (which he also directed), Nurse Betty, Dogma, Lethal Weapon 4, Beverly Hills Cop II and Madagascar.
- Tyler James Williams as Chris at thirteen years old. Tyler has appeared in Sesame Street, Little Bill, and Saturday Night Live.
- Tichina Arnold as Rochelle. Tichina won a NAACP Image Award for her role on Martin. She has also appeared in Ryan's Hope, All My Children, The Cosby Show, and Law & Order. Her movie credits include Big Momma's House and The Little Shop of Horrors.
- Terry Crews as Julius. Formerly a pro-football player (L.A. Rams, San Diego Chargers and Washington Redskins), Terry appeared in The Longest Yard, White Chicks, Starsky & Hutch, and on television, CSI: Miami and The District.
- Tequan Richmond as Drew. Tequan played Ray Charles as a boy in Ray. His other credits include Cold Case, ER, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, MADtv and The Shield.
- Imani Hakim as Tonya. Imani has been acting on the stage since age 7.
- Vincent Martella as Greg. Vincent has been in commercials; his other credits include Stacked and Deuce Bigelow: European Gigolo.
