With Michael leaving for Colorado, the company hires a new manager, Deangelo Vickers (Will Ferrell). Dwight is upset that he wasn’t hired to be the new manager, and finds out that Michael didn’t even recommend him. Everyone else in the office works a little too hard to kiss up to Deangelo, and Michael is jealous that someone else is getting all the attention. Finally he comes to terms with the fact that a new person is taking over.

Michael wants to pass on the tradition of the Dundies, his annual awards show for employees, and he tries to train Deangelo to take over. Deangelo is nervous about hosting and can barely make it through the ceremony. Erin breaks up with Gabe while accepting her award. Everyone in the office sings a tribute to Michael, after they get booted from the restaurant and have to conclude the ceremony back at the office.

Michael tells everyone that he has two more days at the office, but he actually is leaving early. He tries to say goodbye to everyone in the office without drawing too much attention to it, giving each person a special gift, and only Jim figures out the truth. Charged with retaining Michael’s biggest clients, Andy enlists Deangelo to help him, and he learns that Deangelo is a terrible salesman. Gabe tries to win Erin back.

With Michael gone and Deangelo in charge, everyone in the office is trying to impress him. The only person not bothering is Dwight, and that makes Deangelo decides to win him over. Deangelo keeps meeting privately with a group of male employees to the exclusion of everyone else in the office. While trying to impress the office with his basketball dunking skills, Deangelo seriously injures himself and is taken away in an ambulance.

With Deangelo in a coma, Dwight is installed as acting manager of the office, and he institutes a whole range of ridiculous, stringent requirements that everyone has to follow. When Dwight accidentally shoots a pistol in the office and bursts Andy’s eardrum, the employees all blackmail him so they won’t tell the visiting Jo about it. Dwight finally admits what he did and is removed as manager, and Jo enlists Gabe, Jim and Toby as a search committee to find a new manager. Gabe is depressed and tries desperately to win Erin back.

Creed is predictably disastrous as the new temporary manager, and the search committee busies itself trying to find a new manager for the office. In addition to interviewing outside candidates played by a variety of guest stars, they talk to Darryl, Andy and Kelly. Dwight convinces Jo to let him interview also. Angela gets engaged to her boyfriend the state senator, whom everyone (except Angela) knows is gay. Erin asks Andy on a date, but he declines, and Gabe is sent back to Florida after proving to be unstable following his break-up with Erin.
