Michael is jealous that he’s been left out of the gossip loop about the goings-on with the summer interns. His zeal for uncovering juicy news leads him to accidentally find out that Stanley is having an affair, and then he spreads all sorts of false rumors to counter the potentially damaging effects of the original story. In the end, Stanley’s secret gets out anyway, Andy starts to question his sexuality, and Jim and Pam are stuck revealing Pam’s pregnancy to the whole office.

David Wallace arrives from corporate and takes a private meeting with Jim, which drives Michael crazy. Paranoid that he’s about to lose his job to Jim, Michael badmouths Jim to David, only to discover that they would have both gotten promoted. In the end, Jim is made Michael’s co-manager so that they will run the Scranton branch together. Darryl files a workers'-compensation claim, and Dwight doubts him, so Toby and Dwight ineptly investigate Darryl’s claim and finally discover that he was lying, but not without first violating even more company policy.

Jim’s promotion to co-manager causes a disruption at the office: Dwight is angry and resentful that he didn’t get promoted, and Michael has trouble sharing his responsibilities. When David Wallace tells Michael and Jim that they need to figure out a way to distribute a smaller amount of money for people’s raises, the process turns into a disaster, but it helps Michael and Jim to eventually bond. Pam struggles to convey to everyone that she and Jim just want money as gifts for their wedding.

The whole office heads to Niagara Falls for Jim and Pam’s wedding. Michael ends up without a room at the hotel for the wedding and finds himself sleeping in the ice room. Pam wants to keep her pregnancy from her conservative grandmother, but Jim accidentally lets the secret out, and Michael nearly makes it worse. Annoyed with all the guests and the stress, Jim and Pam run off to get married on a boat at the falls, so they don’t mind everyone’s ridiculous antics when they come back for the ceremony at the church.

Dwight and Andy become convinced that an Italian-American insurance salesman is from the Mafia, and they convince Michael of it as well. Michael thinks the guy is trying to shake down Dunder Mifflin for protection, and the three bumble through a plan to scare him off. Kevin takes up residence in Jim’s empty office while Jim and Pam are on their honeymoon, and accidentally ends up canceling Jim’s credit card, while everyone in the office is constantly calling Jim and Pam about trivial problems.

Jim and Pam return from their honeymoon, and Michael reveals that he’s been sleeping with Pam’s mom. Pam does not take it well. She gets very angry and belligerent with Michael, even though everyone else in the office seems to be supportive of him. Neither will back down, and Michael leaves at the end of the day for his date with Pam’s mom. Dwight gives Jim a wooden mallard with a listening device in it, and Jim discovers it and decides to mess with Dwight.

Michael falls into a koi pond while accompanying Jim to a sales meeting, and when he comes back to the office everyone makes fun of him. Michael can’t handle the teasing, and Jim tries to help, but it backfires when everyone finds out that Jim let Michael fall. When Pam and Andy have to go on cold calls together, they keep getting mistaken for a couple, which makes Pam uncomfortable and Andy depressed about his singlehood.

Michael plans a birthday lunch for Pam’s mom, and Pam and Jim are stuck going. Pam keeps emphasizing her mom’s age, which starts making Michael uncomfortable. Dwight starts doing nice things for everyone so that they will owe him favors he can cash in to revolt against Jim. Andy undermines him by doing even nicer things, and it turns into a competition.

Rumors fly that Dunder Mifflin is going to declare bankruptcy, and everyone freaks out. Jim tries to keep things normal, but Michael decides a better distraction would be to play a murder-mystery game. It works at first, but soon everyone wants to get back to work. Jim gets bad news from corporate, and when he sees everyone’s concern, he understands the value of Michael’s distracting game. Andy asks Erin out on a date, but they misunderstand each other about whether it’s for real or within the play-acting of the murder-mystery game.

Michael is invited to New York to appear at the Dunder Mifflin shareholders’ meeting. When the company sends a limo for Michael, he lets Dwight, Andy and Oscar tag along to the meeting and sit in the audience. Faced with the angry mob of shareholders, Michael makes absurd promises that can’t be delivered, and the entire board turns on him. Back at the office, Jim tries and fails to maintain authority, and has to lay down the law on Ryan’s slacking off.
