Pilot

By , About.com Guide

Definition: A pilot is the first produced episode of a TV series, generally created as a test for the network to decide whether or not to order more episodes. Often shows are retooled following their pilots, with cast changes and/or other modifications.
Examples:
Well-known comedies that were altered following their pilots include Seinfeld (which originally lacked the Elaine character and had Kramer being called “Kessler”) and 30 Rock (which featured Rachel Dratch rather than Jane Krakowski in the slightly different role of Jenna).
