The New Normal showcases a new kind of family, with gay couple Bryan and David, plus single mother Goldie and her daughter Shania. Bryan and David are looking to start a family, and Goldie agrees to be the surrogate mother who carries their child. Together, they support each other in pursuing their dreams.

History:
Before its premiere, The New Normal came under fire from certain conservative groups for its gay-friendly content, and the NBC affiliate in Salt Lake City, Utah, KSL, refused to air the show (it was picked up to air on weekends by another Utah station, CW affiliate KUCW). The show debuted to mixed reviews and strong ratings, but started slipping in the ratings as the first season progressed.
