It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia follows the lives of Philadelphia bar-owning friends Mac, Dennis, Charlie and Dee, as well as Dennis and Dee’s father, Frank. The completely amoral and self-centered characters are constantly trying and failing to improve their lives while secretly and not-so-secretly undermining each other.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia started as a pilot called It’s Always Sunny on TV, produced by stars Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day for a rumored $200. The low-budget pilot impressed FX executives, who gave the show a seven-episode first season in 2005. Although ratings were low, word-of-mouth was strong enough to land the show a second season, when Danny DeVito, a professed fan, joined the cast as Frank Reynolds, thus raising the show’s profile. Popularity continued to increase, and in 2008 the network ordered an impressive 52 episodes, to be spread over four 13-episode seasons.
